Delicate, lively, and endlessly charming, meet the Pilea depressa, sometimes referred to as “Baby Tears.” This plant forms a soft cascade of tiny, round leaves that spill beautifully over the edges of pots, creating movement and softness wherever it’s displayed.

Its petite foliage creates a dense, cushion-like mat of bright green, giving the plant an almost mossy appearance with a refined texture. This Pilea brings a light, airy energy to spaces and pairs effortlessly with both bold statement plants or on its own.

Native to the humid regions of Central and South America, Pilea depressa grows low to the ground in tropical forests, spreading across shaded understories, which is why it is able to tolerate lower-light settings.

In its natural habitat, it creeps and carpets the forest floor, thriving in consistently humid air which is why this plant typically thrives in an enclosed terrarium set-up.

CARE:

  • Bright, indirect light is ideal. It tolerates periods of low-medium light, but growth will be fuller and more compact with consistently brighter conditions. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh direct sun which can fade, yellow, and crisp its leaves
  • Keep the soil slightly moist. This plant prefers steady moisture. Do not allow the soil to dry out completely, but avoid keeping the soil soggy. Aim to water when the first 1-2 inches of the top soil feels dry.
  • Thrives in higher humidity settings, but  adaptable to household humidity.
  • Keep away from heating and air conditioning vents which can quickly dry out the plant
