Matucana polzii is a less common and sought-after cactus species in Canada. It hails from the high-altitude regions of Peru. Compact and globular in shape, this little cactus might not look flashy at first glance, but when it blooms, it produces some of the most stunning flowers in the cactus world. Its vibrant orange-red tubular blooms are large in proportion to the body .

CARE:

  • Does bright, indirect light and can tolerate some direct sun. Indoors, place it in a south or west-facing window where it gets several hours of sunlight daily. If placed outdoors during the summertime, protect from scorching midday sun during the hottest summer months, which may cause the plant to yellow
  • Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings and avoid letting water sit around the base of the plant to prevent rot.
  • Reduce watering in fall and keep it almost completely dry in winter to allow for dormancy.
  • To encourage blooms, provide a cool, dry winter rest period (mimicking its natural habitat). Ensure the cactus gets plenty of bright light during its active growth phase in spring.

  • The roots of Matucana are prone to rot in compact or water-retentive soil. Avoid using heavy potting soils or soils that retain too much moisture, so opt for a well-draining, gritty potting media.
